The Creation of the Te Tai Poutini RTLB Tohu
The new tohu for Te Tai Poutini RTLB Cluster 32 was created by designer Taane Flanagan of Tai Creative, as a visual representation of the cluster’s kaupapa and the unique environment of the West Coast. This design centres the tamaiti — symbolised by the feather of the kōtuku, a rare and graceful bird native to Te Tai Poutini — reflecting the beauty, potential, and journey of each learner. Surrounding the tamaiti is a pūhoro koru, representing the strength and support of the RTLB team, with smaller koru branching outward to show the tamariki uplifted by this mahi. The tāniko niho taniwha pattern honours Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, with flowing negative space symbolising rivers that connect maunga to moana — just as tamariki move through learning and life. At the base, the moana represents opportunity: a vast, open world ready for tamariki to step into, supported and prepared. This tohu is more than a logo — it’s a story of connection, growth, and the collective strength that surrounds every learner across the region’s 34 kura.
